Tower of Ivory

Submission Guidelines

Tower of Ivory Literary Journal is now accepting fiction, articles, poetry and art submissions.

What we are looking for:

We are interested in publishing quality fiction, articles, poetry and art of any genre, with an emphasis on fantasy. We are dedicated to elevating Internet arts to a greater level of excellence. To that end, we are looking for quality in submissions more than genre restrictions.

Fiction: Word count acceptable is 500 to 7,500. This is flexible. If the story is an excerpt from a novel, please note this in your cover letter. However, the story must be able to "stand alone." If you have an illustration, that's wonderful. If not, we may contract illustration for the piece. Contracted illustration will be chosen by the staff of Tower of Ivory and is not subject to approval by the author. Send all stories to Annie McAndrew at submissions_towerofivory@hotmail.com.

At this time, we are not accepting any more serialised novels. If you desire to change our mind, please send a query to Emily Snyder at publisher.towerofivory@juno.com.

Articles: Word count acceptable 500 to 2,000 words. This is flexible. Articles can cover a wide spectrum of topics, but should be informative and thought-provoking. Essays and/or shortened theses will be accepted. Please query via e-mail first before submitting. Place "Article Query" in your title line. Send all queries to Emily Snyder at publisher.towerofivory@juno.com.

Poetry: There is no limit as to lines, within reason. Please lay out on paper exactly as you wish printed including line breaks, capitalization and punctuation. Please send no more than 3 poems per quarterly volume. Remember to only send 1 (one) poem per e-mail. If using regular mail, up to 3 may be sent together. Send all poetry to Annie McAndrew at submissions_towerofivory@hotmail.com.

Artwork: May be sent either via e-mail or snail-mail. Please send a publishable photocopy and keep your original, as they will not be returned. If you wish to send art via e-mail, please send attach it in either .jpg or .gif format. Photographs of your drawings, paintings, sculpture or other art forms are acceptable. Again photos will not be returned -- do not send originals. If you are interested in being an illustrator and can work quickly under a short deadline, send us samples of your work (remember, copies!) with your list of previous credits. We will need several people 'on call' for monthly illustrations or covers. Send all art to Emily Snyder at publisher.towerofivory@juno.com.

All work will be subject to editorial approval. NO EXPLICIT SEX OR EXTREME VIOLENCE. Mature topics, situations, language, and themes are acceptable, as long as they further the purpose of the story. Indiscriminate usage of such is discouraged, as this is an all-ages webzine. The editor reserves the right to edit every published work. Spelling and punctuation errors will be corrected. However, keep in mind that sloppy manuscripts will lessen your credibility as a serious artist.

Manuscript Format:

  • Via US Mail or post: Please include your full name, address and a short bio with all submissions. All manuscripts should be double-spaced and in a readable font such as Courier or Times New Roman, size 10 to 14. For poetry, see specific guidelines below. Your name and address (including e-mail if you have it), title of piece and word count should be on the cover page along with a short bio. Please number your pages and put your last name and the title on each page. If you want your manuscript returned, send an SASE with sufficient postage. Do not send the manuscript by UPS or any other system that requires us to sign for it.

Send snail-mail submissions to:

Tower of Ivory Submissions
137 Frye Street
Marlborough, MA 01752

  • Via e-mail: E-mail submissions should follow the same guidelines as above. Please put "submission" in the title line, as well as your name and the title of the piece. Manuscripts should be attached to the e-mail, unless your software does not allow attachments. There is no need for SASE. We use Word, so we prefer Word or .doc format. Text (ASCII) format or RTF (Rich Text Format) are also acceptable. Also, please send only one poem or manuscript per e-mail. E-mail submissions will be replied through e-mail.

Send email submissions to:

Tower of Ivory will retain first electronic rights for three months. After that, rights will revert back to you. By submitting a piece of work to Tower of Ivory, you are giving permission to have that piece published in Tower of Ivory. Tower of Ivory will hold the rights on the piece until the author requests that the piece be removed. Short stories, poems, art and articles will be archived for future readers to enjoy. Reprints will be considered -- provided the author holds the copyright and is not in violation of other contracts. No simultaneous submissions.

Unfortunately, at this time there will be no compensation for any works published in Tower of Ivory. However, we will gladly provide links to e-mail addresses & personal pages. You may also download a banner to publicize your work.

We look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,

Annie McAndrew, Editor (submissions_towerofivory@hotmail.com)
