Unfortunately, for the longest time, HCH drama has looked at The Matchmaker as sort of the "red-haired step-child" of its program. This is mainly because the cast and crew of HCH Drama entered into the 2005-2006 school year with the thought that we were going to do really great, important and brilliant theatre, with Nutcracker in the Winter and Hamlet in the Spring. However, word came from on high that we were not allowed to do Hamlet and so Matchmaker was proposed in its place.
But, despite the lack of weighty subject matter, in retrospect, Matchmaker holds its own against all the shows HCH has put on. Whitney Taylor shines as Dolly Levi, mixing just the right amount of worldliness with romance, and just a bit of (practical) spunk. And Joe Manzella and Brian O'Leary steal every scene they're in with perhaps some of the best chemistry on stage as the bumbling Cornelius Hackl and Barnaby Tucker.
The Matchmaker is a delightful romp. And for those in the know, it is truly full of pudding!
