Way back at the end of the 2004 school year, HCH experienced one of those shifts that are common round about every other year when the previous old guard went on to college and a new guard took its place. What that meant for HCH drama, though, was that the cast who assembled to perform King of Fools
had, with only a few notable exceptions, never taken part in a previous HCH musical. (HCH alternates a play and musical every other year.)
Fortunately, HCH was up to the task as was the new guard, led by the talented Jess Daigneault as the proud princess Cassandra. Ryan Gonor took on his first lead role as King Frederick, Gayle Farrington wowed us all with her crystal voice and ditzy rendition of Lucy, Eric Chaves stepped up to bat as Nigel, Alina Saez broke out as Xena-like Regina...and Matt Wiedeman gave birth to one of the best characters of all time, Raoul.
It was a delight for Miss Snyder, who had been working sporatically over the years on King of Fools (she began writing music for it when she first read the tale in fourth grade) and who now had a reason to finish writing the book and lyrics of her first full-out musical. And, having learnt from her last opera-ballet, Bearskin, she enlisted the aid of Ed Marcus to orchestrate her songs. Julie Snyder returned to lead the orchestra, and Mama Snyder stepped in to produce. Phew!
The story itself, although derived from the Grimms tale, resembles the original only in a few details. For the play, the subplots of the four lovers (Nigel, Lucy, Raoul, Regina) was devised, and the cause of Cassandra going to the castle was changed from a rather cruel trick played by Frederick in the original to the machinations of the introduced villains Brosch and Vianne.
