Windows Media Video of Song/Song with Vocal Track/Links

The first song to be written specifically for this production was "The Man Without a Face." It had come to me one day whilst fiddling about on the piano, along with the first verse in its entirety.

What will she see
When she looks at me
But a man without a face?
Hardly a trace
Of the man that I was
In another time
Another place.

I knew immediately that this was the "big song" by Bearskin, although at the time I had not yet seriously considered expanding it into a full production (or rather, I thought it would take several years' more time!). But when Julie urged me to write Bearskin, it wasn't long until I had to wrestle with the lyrics for this crucial song.

Fortunately, my good friend and brilliant lyricist, Annie McAndrew (with whom I feebly helped lampoon Titanic on the Roof) was on tap and after only hearing a brief run-through of the tune and the plot, managed to come up with the next three verses for the song.

For I cannot claim
Gallant lover's name
Cannot woo with truth and grace.
By her I'd stand,
With a traitor's hand
And in kissing her
Usurp my place!

How shall a beast
Then demand release
From a mire of shame and greed?
How be surprised
At her piteous eyes
With a monst'rous suit
Only to plead?

Then will I go
To what end, I know -
Damned beyond wreck or repair!
For now do I see
That for such men as me
Only what's forbidden
To me is fair.

Which led me to do a tag verse to the song, as well as modify her second verse for the reprise, as so:

Then if I'm damned
As is ev'ry weak man
Why avoid what is to come?
So dance, if you dare
To the devil's snare
To the gypsy's pipe
And the hangman's drum!
Come, all you devils -
COME!

Reprise:
I cannot claim
Your lover's name
May not woo with truth and grace.
Myself I must hide
Seven years abide
Until all my faults
Have been erased.

Then, hush, ask no more
If I'm he who your
Voice has sung with unearned praise.
But I swear to you now
This soldier's vow
That not ev'ry man
Who went away
Died on that battlefield...
...that day.

(Can we just say that DJ sang it beyond beautifully? Can we just say that when we wrote this song, we were thinking of DJ's glorious voice belting this sucker? Can we just say FWAH?! Or, as my brother once put it: "I'm so happy I could just say Narf! ...In fact, I think I will say Narf! NARF NARF!!!")

So, without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, we present the feeble midi orchestration of "Man Without a Face." Enjoy.
